PDF to Excel

Extract tables and data from PDFs into editable Excel spreadsheets. Free, private, and browser-based — no manual re-typing needed.

Why Convert PDF to Excel?

Bank statements, invoices and reports lock their data inside a printable layout. Copying a table from a PDF into Excel usually splits cells in the wrong places and loses the rows and columns.

LuraPDF reads the text on each page and where it sits, finds the tables, and writes them to an .xlsx file with one worksheet per page. Merged cells and header rows are kept. It all runs in your browser, so your financial files stay on your device.

How to convert PDF to Excel online

1

Upload your PDF

Select the PDF containing tables or data you want to extract from your device. Files stay local.

2

Pick a mode and pages

Detected tables finds real tables on each page and exports only those. Full text grid exports every line of text as a row, for pages where detection misses. Enter a page range to convert only some pages.

3

Convert

Tables are found from the lines drawn on the page first, then from how the text lines up. Each PDF page becomes its own worksheet.

4

Check the spreadsheet

Open the .xlsx in Excel or Google Sheets. In Detected tables mode, merged cells and header rows come through as they were in the PDF.

5

Download the file

Click Convert and download your Excel-ready spreadsheet — no watermark, no signup, no upload.

100% Private

Conversion happens locally in your browser — your financial and business PDFs are never uploaded to a server.

Auto Table Detection

Automatically detects and extracts tables from PDFs, preserving row and column structure.

Free Forever

Convert PDF to Excel for free — no sign-up, no subscription, no watermark on output.

One sheet per page

Each PDF page gets its own worksheet, named after the page, so you always know where a table came from.

Merged cells and headers kept

Cells that span several columns stay merged, and header rows stay bold, so the table reads the way it did in the PDF.

A fallback for tricky pages

If table detection misses your data, Full text grid exports every line of text as a row, so nothing is left behind.

Benefits of Browser-Based PDF to Excel

Converting locally in the browser gives you privacy, accuracy, and speed that cloud-based tools cannot match for sensitive data.

  • Privacy — financial PDFs, invoices, and business reports never leave your machine. No cloud API processes your data.
  • Saves hours — re-keying a 12-month bank statement by hand is a full afternoon; extraction takes seconds.
  • Tables stay tables. Rows, columns, merged cells and header rows come through, so you're not rebuilding the grid by hand.
  • Easy to trace. One worksheet per PDF page means every table points back to the page it came from.
  • Nothing left behind. Full text grid mode exports every line when table detection misses a table.
  • Free with no watermark — no subscription required for any number of PDF-to-Excel conversions.

How PDF to Excel Conversion Works

PDF.js reads the text on each page, with the position and size of every piece of text. The table finder looks first for the lines drawn around and inside tables. Where there are none, it groups text by how it lines up in rows and columns.

Each table becomes rows in that page's worksheet, with merged cells and bold header rows kept. The .xlsx file is built in your browser's memory and downloaded straight to your device. No data is sent anywhere.

Tips for Best PDF to Excel Results

The quality of the output depends on the quality of the source PDF — a few prep steps make a big difference.

  1. Tip 1:

PDFs made from a program work best. A scanned page is a picture, with no text for the converter to read.

  2. Tip 2:

If a table comes out incomplete, switch to Full text grid. It exports every line of text as a row.

  3. Tip 3:

Need CSV for a script or database? Use PDF to CSV instead. It can save one .csv per table or all of them in one file.

  4. Tip 4:

Enter a page range, such as 3-5, to convert only the pages with tables. Large files finish faster.

  5. Tip 5:

Values arrive as text. If Excel shows a green triangle on numbers, select the cells and choose Convert to Number.

  6. Tip 6:

Numeric formatting (currency symbols, thousands separators) can be re-applied in Excel after extraction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert a PDF with tables to Excel for free?
Yes. Upload your PDF and LuraPDF extracts the table data into an Excel file — completely free with no sign-up.
Will the Excel file match the exact table structure in the PDF?
LuraPDF accurately extracts well-formatted tables. Complex merged cells or tables with unusual layouts may require minor manual adjustment after conversion.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to Excel?
Not directly. A scanned page is a picture, so there's no text for the converter to read into cells. The converter tells you when a PDF has no text to extract.
Is it safe to convert PDF data to Excel online?
Yes. All processing is done locally in your browser — your data never leaves your device.
What if my PDF has multiple tables on the same page?
Each table is found separately. All the tables on a page go into that page's sheet, one after another, with a blank row between them.
Is converting financial PDFs online safe?
With LuraPDF, yes — your file never uploads. Bank statements, invoices, and financial reports stay entirely on your device throughout the conversion.
Does it export CSV too?
Not this tool. It writes .xlsx files for Excel and Google Sheets. For plain CSV, use PDF to CSV. It finds tables the same way and saves one .csv per table, or every table in one file.
Can I convert password-protected PDFs?
Unlock the PDF first with our Unlock PDF tool, then convert the unlocked version to Excel.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes for small files. Desktop is preferred for large financial statements with many pages.
Are there watermarks on the XLSX output?
No. The XLSX file is completely clean — no watermarks, no branding, no LuraPDF content in the cells.
